We are living in a time of uncertainty which has adorned itself with this more than justified connotation, given that it is unthinkable and impossible to have certain points of reference in such a complex and unpredictable world, where epoch turning points follow one another with sudden unexpected changes within metamorphic processes that are thereby subject to growing erratic evolutions.

The existence of lasting bedrocks in which is rooted man’s knowledge has turned out to be a false hope leading to the dramatic collapse of the same pillars that a millenary tradition has handed on from generation to generation as sound certainties.

In a globalized society where the truth seems to correspond to the certainty of having no certainties, there is no right-minded person who would bet, with authoritarian haughtiness, on the concept of centre, perimeter, definition, fortuitousness and predestination. Imminence dominating the microcosm is reflected in the same possibilities of collapse endangering the macrocosm. We are therefore all wayfarers and beggars, being aware that there is nothing to found as everything is founded by itself in an ineluctable way. Meanwhile, and we will focus on this idea later on, in the most modified places, being at risk of getting to a point of no return, reason and its reasons are strategically activated to turn what seemed to be utopian into topical. The time of uncertainty is the ideal time to implement a project. Life prevails with its need of rules and wishes, everywhere deep thoughts – which are never separated from pathos and feelings rejecting homologation – are capable of sounding reality to get close to innovative energies that, in order to be new, also have to be good. These two inseparable qualities allow us to hope beyond any possible risk, thereby going through crises with due respect for life, unique and inalienable value. What is new is also good and valid here and now. By modo is meant what is really modern and up-to-date without incurring passing and fickle fads.

Being aware of what modernity means involves the right reference to everything is considered to be modo, that is now, in our daily life, and helps improve our quality of life. New that is not also good and good that is not also new are unsuited for man’s development, whereas the values passed down over the centuries, have reached us like breathing air and are extremely modern due to their undisputed topicality.

The constant inclination to love life in the magnificent sense of the verb Sein meaning being and belonging at the same time is also modern. Goethe’s lesson is therefore to be followed, when he praises a fertile – felix – life giving light and hope to man that makes plans for the time of continuity. Those who really enjoy life remain spellbound at its wonders; search for its secrets, bending their forehead when mystery requires silence, a very human gift, lost in our unlivable cities, in the muddling that stuns us and turns away our excessive haste from the mirror of our thoughts. The latter helps us find again a meditative silence and, as if we were in front of the natural majesty and the breath of a solemn harmony, we are conquered by this contemplative silence. We have completely lost interest in the unknowable; which has detached us from the noblest silence, that of reason in front of mystery. Furthermore, if unavoidable death itself is now taken into account not only as a result of the imponderable but also of the duration influencing the metamorphic passage into living matter, when smiling and remembering the terrible momento mori that disgraced the already sad passage into this vale of tears, we still cannot speak up for our right to live.

Memento vivere is a strong warning like the lay aude sapere inviting to dare for the sake of knowledge from which derived science involving men working for themselves, if science and conscience constantly are to come true.

Writing these pages aimed at introducing an important collection of graphic projects to advertise drugs, I have thought of proposing my own seeds in order to verify who we are and how much we have changed throughout centuries vis-à-vis our ancestors. Memento vivere is our motto and we would like to recommend it to those who lead a passive life, renouncing to live an authentic life in accordance with all the good deeds made by men in our days. On the occasion of the centenary celebrations of the Medical and Pharmacological Association, publisher Giovanni Pacifico has introduced his book Pianeta Salute – the world of health – entrusting me with the task of disseminating, if necessary, the concept of Charity as a virtue and prerogative of scientists that are able to prescribe the right drug to those who need it.

On the other hand, if research studies had not yielded all the drugs that throughout time have been given to those in need, even if sometimes they have been withdrawn from the market, many diseases couldn’t have been eradicated and physical pain couldn’t have been relieved without today’s treatments.

Some of the following pages will focus on the term care and its double meaning, but the term charity - once only referred to God and handed on through the example of man’s Son – will be examined first from a lay perspective.

Obviously, charity doesn’t have to be confused with almsgiving, even if the two terms may converge in the action of donating and receiving a benefit.

“Jesus, throw light upon us”, is a sublime invocation mainly because it emphasizes that charity is brightness, light and love: those who devote their knowledge, science and love to the community, make things clear; those who are concerned with human development as a whole are like charity in operation.

Daring to live is justified when true science is itself a source of poetry: it has the task to recover harmony assuring that in the heart of chaos there is the principle of order and that life made up of rules and wishes with its discontinuities and inequalities, at its highest vitality, may endanger all those balances that have to be re-established through the science of the medium. Therefore, let’s praise medical and pharmaceutical science, nature and all those who investigate its secrets being aware that the Greek term pharmakon means both a treating and life saving medicine and poison.

The expression qui non servat occidit is addressed to all those who don’t save you or pay attention to safeguard your health and end up dispatching you: the word occidit really sounds like occaso – that is the sunset for those who pass by the West.

Even though drugs can always have double effects, we use to resort to medicines that, according to contra-indications, are able to relieve us from a disease while they could also cause even more serious illnesses. Contraindications are extremely cautionary: watch side effects, intoxications, the meaning of the epitaph mentioned by the physician and writer Francesco Redi: “ I was in good health, I wanted to be better and so I am here”.

We are always very grateful to doctors and pharmacists that so many times have helped us get back into shape, but, as both categories have not shunned the darts of irony, we will revert to a few recurrent expressions in everyday language.

The Imaginary Invalid by Molière provides us with the following expression that might be referred to an eminent luminary who has ended up on the front page: “Judging by his wealth, he must have killed many people”.

The following reflection by Jonathan Swift is rather eloquent “Apollo, the god of medicine, was also believed to be the one who sent disease. In the beginning, these two apparently opposite elements converged in a single trade, which is still the case”.

Martial’s thoughts were characterized by great wisdom: “Life is not just living, but living in good health”.

For those who collect drugs, regularly bought to be prepared to deal with any eventuality, it will be sufficient to mention the passage of La coscienza di Zeno by Italo Svevo where the author describes his personal drawers. “I have got drawers full of drugs, and these are the only drawers that I try to keep always tidy.

I love my drugs and I know that if I drop one of them, sooner or later I will return to it. On the other hand, I don’t think I have wasted my time. I wonder how long ago and of which disease I would be already died, if my pain hadn’t simulated them all in time, so that I was induced to treat them before they could grab me”. Man has always tried to justify his pain warning of the fact that an illness is affecting his body. This is certainly a fundamental alarm signal and, as a result, it can also be beneficial: man is a trainee and pain is his trainer. Also Aesop, quite rightly, maintained: Patemata matemata, that is pains are like lessons. In this connection, one could even distinguish between physical pains and a kind of inner incurable sufferings to the point that Tristan says his own grief is too mature and he is going to die of a broken heart. The case of Tristan and other souls tormented by impossible love stories might be summed up by the following maxim: mulier malum necessarium sicut medicina; which can be referred to all sentimental men for whom reason doesn’t count. Maybe we are wandering from our main subject. Let’s draw together the threads of our argument on memento vivere, that implies a wise planning quality respecting the human body as well as generous people taking care of it and keeping it in good health.

For too many centuries memento mori has contributed to spread the idea that, before going back to the original ashes, the human body had to be mortified. Both medical and pharmaceutical science have instead contributed to rethink life putting forward a new way of living. On the occasion of the Centenary of the two sciences following parallel and interfering lines of research, neither joint nor separated, it is fair to celebrate their merits and achievements that, especially in times of utmost modification, mediate between the unshakeable logic and life expectations. Both medical and pharmaceutical science give a sense and support the will to live, obliging us to be able to find new adequate solutions and meet our needs: it is just a question of time. Man is able to adopt the right measures in order to turn knowledge into planning practice and, in this connection, Pope John XXIII had a sort of prophetical intuition: “It is high time to make out the signs of times, seize opportunities and be farsighted”.

Just like the Greek term pharmacon means both medicine and poison, the Latin word cura means at the same time watchful care and worrying anxiety. The Georges-Calonghi dictionary is rather illuminating: from its original coisa, cf. il peligno coisates = curaverunt, and from its archaic form coira, cura means care, attention, effort. On the opposite front, the same term means preoccupation, affliction, even a silent pain, a disease that may be deadly when it is not curabilis , that is curable. Briefly, any kind of care has an existential side involving all human beings, it is a worm of the mind, arising or arisen troubles, a problem to be solved so as to feel free from a given grief at a given time. Regardless of the various degrees of the term as they were classified by Sallust – serious, very serious, extremely serious, either of little importance , parva cura , or even of paramount importance – it is up to

those who take care of care, by their loving attentions, to help solve the tragedy of those who are still in anguish.

As matter of fact, people are not always willing to allow others to share their thoughts. Only after his brother Giovanni had committed suicide, the Italian writer Ugo Foscolo, expressed all his pain to him and confided: ‘Sento gli avversi numi e le segrete cure che al viver tuo furon tempesta’ – I can now feel the hostility of the gods and secret cares that made you live a stormy life. – And also the cypresses seem to invite the Italian poet Carducci – while travelling on a steam locomotive and passing in front of San Guido - to stay there by promising him : “Pan l’eterno….il dissidio, mortal, delle tue cure nella diva armonia sommergerà” – The Eternal Pan will sink the deadly quarrel of your cares into divine harmony – Any inequality, any worry is like a care to be cured: Heaven help the unfortunate person who has nobody that can be close to him, take care of him and help him recover both his physical and psychological harmony he has lost for many different reasons. There is no man without worries; this is the reason why Ecclesiastes warns us that each day has enough pain: cuique diei sufficit militia sua, and militia means the sufficient sufferings for that day, the care disrupting the wish to live with that serenity never bestowed on mortals.

In his excellent book “Being and Time”, Martin Heidegger reports a witty fable written by the poet Gaio Giulio Igino in order to clear up the meaning of care through a metaphor. In Latin mythology Care is the goddess of anxiety and worries and in his Fables (ccxx) Iginio narrates that the pensive goddess cum fluvium transiret – while crossing the river - that is of course the perennial river of life, saw some clayey mud.

She stopped on her way where water flowed quickly on that plastic material and picked up a fair quantity of it. She started to mould it until the softest of the plastic materials took the form of man. As she was contemplating her sculpture and thinking over the fruit of their creativity, Jupiter appeared. The father of gods appreciated her work and Care – Anxiety – managed to convince the Lord of Olympus to infuse that shape with the spirit of life. A breath was then sufficient to give birth to a living creature, that is man. Jupiter liked that prototype and immediately claimed its ownership: he had given life to it. Anxiety objected that it belonged to herself and insisted on giving him her name. A very heated debate sparked off, Earth intervened and quite plainly wanted to assert her rights: she has provided the raw material, his body, therefore she had the right to give him her name. Since none of the three deities was willing to give up, Saturn, who was chosen as Supreme Judge, ruled: “Jupiter, you infused the spirit, therefore, after his death, you will receive his soul. Earth, you gave him the matter (mater-ea, ipsa mater), therefore his body will be given back to you. Care, Anxiety, as you were the first to mould him, you will possess him throughout all his life.

Furthermore, since there is no agreement on his name, let us call him homo, given that he is made of humus, the earth’s humour”.

The story has been narrated quite freely in order to emphasize that man belongs to Anxiety and to recall that from the term humus also derives humbricus , that is the earthworm with which man, in the brute sense of the word, was once associated out of humility.

Moreover, it shouldn’t be forgotten that ancient wisdom distinguished between homo and vir . The first one was so to speak “calculated” on the basis of the greatest common divisor, that is taking into account common factors. The concept of vir was completely different: he distinguished himself for practising virtues, at least the cardinal ones; which involved his being present in history showing his wisdom and moral strength – rather different from brute force – as well as justice and tolerance.

The digressions through which this text unfolds are based on the social and psychological knowledge that is closely related to man’s universal, what is left of man beyond the ideological collapse and the idle talks overwhelming us in this time of uncertainty, that, I repeat, has rightly declared itself uncertain as the world is becoming increasingly complex and unpredictable.

Meanwhile, despite the severity of the sudden epoch-making changes that are even characterized by imbalances leading to further crises throughout unpredictable processes,

Heidegger states that ‘man is still the one who is wondering who, what and the way he himself is’.

Rejecting or banning such supreme arguments as well as absolute and eternal truths, man is still dominated by Care: he is overwhelmed by Anxiety especially when he gives up pathos, that is feelings and is standardized through undifferentiated homogenization.

A volume that acknowledges the development of images aimed at advertising some drugs, by proposing them with the charisma of efficacy, can turn out to be highly instructive. Looking behind ourselves, we discover other existential modalities, and, we venture to say, we pay attention to those human dimensions leading to taking care of one’s body, of nature and others.

We are all living questions. Questions that are doomed to have no answers despite the paramount scientific breakthroughs, that are a certain point of reference in our way towards the possible. Since time immemorial, our fathers started to ask themselves who they were, where did they come from, and where they were going to and, lacking any acceptable answer, they tried to adapt logos to reason so as to get to a kind of undisputable behavioral paradigm. Those who don’t know who they are can identify with what they do. Action ethic recognizes life as absolute value and also considers as values all contributions aimed at giving added quality to life-time. Those who don’t know their origins, know that they are going towards something and that they can do that with, for and among others. In our present time, too many people have forgotten that they have a head to think, hands to do things and act like human men, as well as feet to go towards ….It is undeniable that we are all wayfarers and even beggars, according to Luther. In this time of relentless globalization wayfarers and beggars are going through dramatically unpredictable experiences, while people are increasingly less interested in the unknowable. Therefore, if on the one hand cares are rather widespread, on the other, it is difficult to cure them.

Just a few people appear to be concerned with what is universally valid: It costs a lot to commit oneself to supporting its underlying reasons, it is on the contrary worthwhile passing on to those who wish it, the ethical experience of a highly human commitment.

Yet, it is precisely during crises that can even reach a point of no return, in a time of utmost change, that the need of implementing a project inevitably emerges.

People start working in view of a recovery, as nobody is willing to accept a definitive defeat: opportunities are seized and, in spite of starting from a kind of surviving becoming, action is always directed to a kind of living one. We take care of our cares, as it happens after a cataclysm, taking into account what existed before and being so brave so as to resume the journey towards the time of continuity. This implies riding the wave of Utopia, or sailing towards it and, in doing so, hope has always been regained.

Staying on this course, one can providentially meet Agatotopia, a nice land where poetic life can be led, which is particularly suitable for human men. These are the builders of humanity who distinguish themselves for their great intelligence, positive models of life, excellence of scientific and technological progress. And precisely where science and conscience prove true it is confirmed that man is too much if he is there or too little if he is not there.

Creationists and evolutionists agree upon this truth, since it is a matter of being aware to have inherited the land and be obliged to take care of it in order to give life a sense. Man is really too much if he is there: he respects life where his life is longer, he passes from a socio-natural context to cosmic space: and he particularly commit himself to observing what is happening in the world. When man is not there, he is really too little: he makes the difference between nature and culture irreconcilable; he is exalted through foolishness, brutality and insatiable craving for power that makes any existential condition on our planet rather hard. Excessiveness is an evident trait of a wily communication system, which does concern us as we propose incredibly exaggerated formulae promising impossible miracles and making the gap between immense riches and extreme poverty unbridgeable.

The worst harm is caused by new waves of ignorance, fanaticism, and superstition that in the present globalized world are increasingly interfering with the wish and need for peace. It is of course undeniable that globalization is advancing relentlessly: this is witnessed by the spreading of pain all over the world, the overthrow of natural laws and disruption of all those achievements requiring great efforts and aimed at safeguarding man’s fundamental rights. Paradoxically, superfetation of laws goes hand in hand with a widespread strong craving for justice: all these cares have to be cured.

The poetry with political and social commitment by Cesar Vallejo turns out to be more topical nowadays than at the time it was written for the Spanish civil war. The poet hoped to reverse all reversals that had upset a quite life style and the common good from any possible point of view. As a consequence, in order to reverse the reversal that had made pain so widespread, he launched an appeal to all human men. He was able to observe its inclement expansion ‘with a pace of thirty minutes per second, a restless pain is a double pain…..and a quite existence turns into double grief’. In the communication of uncertain times, and especially in advertising, words are either empty or betrayed first in their meaning and then in their sense. There is nothing new in saying that news items and virtual reality can be confused by communication, so that people react to live tragic events as if they were special effects created by the most creative and fanciful director. Then everything is made less complex with the ballet underscoring an advertisement with the most appropriate music accompanying the alerted memory. All this happens while pain seems to rage everywhere, as chants Vallejo: chest, lapel, wallet, glass, butcher’s shop, arithmetic, drawers, wheat, air, water, headache – that took off much of my forehead out of my face – heart and its box, consecrated bread, all reversals to be reversed. It is therefore necessary to join forces with all other men and cure our cares that are increasing exponentially: suffering is a serious problem even if one prays. Reversing reversals is like curing cares: without this appeal, this volume would be meaningless, it couldn’t spur to recover the right dose of harmony for our human dimension.

Working as doctors and choosing the most appropriate treatment is of course a tangible sign of great professionalism. However, if on the one hand everything seems to be fair and perfect from the top, on the other, users’ worries don’t seem to be completely unjustified. Man’s questions don’t find their appropriate answers in social practice. We are dealing with problems that cannot be easily solved, even in the long run. Furthermore, it is rather difficult to find out persuasive arguments to propose to robot-like mutants of the future as well as to the living ones of today, in order to feel like new men trying to live as fully as possible, nurtured like Faust by the inner light teaching him how to take care of himself, worldly life and above all others.

Heavens hiding the mysteries of Order, Harmony and Love within the Universe have gone away from our inhuman horizons. The Babel of overlapping voices trying to cover up one another rejects the dialogue involving logos that is thought. Idle talks simulate communication and make people feel confused by the comment of crazy decibels.

Yet the media, with absolute arrogance, guarantee positive effects especially as to drugs, those that make uneasiness and illness disappear in a flash. And while certifying images start to fade away, a very quick lowkey voice goes on mentioning regulations and figures to recommend to be careful since these are drugs that, if used in the wrong way, can cause serious damage. Heaven help us! The Delphic Oracle once engaged us to know ourselves and our human dimension was checked. In a time of uncertainty it is very difficult to know oneself, despite all the sciences reading in the maze of our psyche and behavioural unbalances. It is really hard to know oneself - gnoti s’auton – since, even visà- vis things we already know, we are perennial apprentices: we have to take into account, among the things we don’t know, those that could be more or less likely to be useful to us.

“Know ignorance!” - gnoti agnoian – seems to be a more up-to-date imperative. We have to pay attention to ambiguity and confusion, incomprehensible notes attached to insurance or banking contracts and so on. We have to be suspicious of any proposed good, as tricks are always behind appearances. When we buy a drug, we are always invited to carefully read its contra-indications and from that time onwards, we are overwhelmed by doubts.

Possible adverse effects appear to be so terribly dangerous that we give up taking an efficacious drug that may turn out to be poison. Drug advertising illustrated in these pages is a clear indication of the different attitudes ranging from naivety to an increasingly deep scientific awareness, and quite luckily medical and pharmaceutical knowledge is not affected by delusions of omnipotence so as to look like ideology. I am referring to the arrogance of those scientists that are not worried by ecological disasters , given that from the earth submerged by rubbish, it will be possible to emigrate to other planets. Maybe they are the prophets of the future, yet their certainties are not supported by wise contra-indications. Courage refuses to know the unknown. It is high time to cure our cares: for the sake of the others, trying to stop those who are acting unawares causing naivety and confusion in minds overcome by occult persuasion, the illusion of false promises, touts of remedies that have nothing to do with the recovery of good health. Let’s think of all the easy money earned by so many unpunished people exploiting the pain of those in peril of their life without scruple. It is really high time to safeguard professional dignity, the dignity that is conquered through work, utmost reward for all those who have a head to think, hands to act and feet to be wayfarers and pilgrims whose final destination is Truth. We shouldn’t forget that when Pontius Pilate asks Jesus the following direct question: quid est veritas ? the Son of man doesn’t answer. According to esoteric wisdom the same question had an answer in its anagram est vir qui adest ?

What is truth ? It is the man in front of you !

Pilate refused to take care of the cares of that just man who would be crucified. We, sons of reason, we are humbly aware that truth is unique even if each man lends it his face. We hope it will always be human and caring about other people’s suffering and needs.

Progress in Hormone Research, 1949): “the pancreas is the guardian of the liver).

Chimici Cesare Pegna & Figli – Firenze?

Orazio: Omne tulit punctum qui miscuit utile dulci”.

Sempre gli manca il fuoco che fa rima con cuoco;

Ridotto è il guardaroba all’ultima giacchetta

e si raggela l’aria, anch’essa poveretta.

I ponderosi libri dall’usura azzannati

manda rimedio certo, ultra sperimentato,

almen ci sarà calma, sarà concentrazione

e resterà il poeta fedele all’illusione.

Vaso di FarmaciaPharmacology studies the properties of medicines; obviously, in order to be distributed and used, they have to be tested, but it is well-known that widespread communication is particularly positive to both knowledge and productive economy. Graphic design and popularization of drugs through advertising over time have helped to give better visibility – to use a modern and fashionable term – to the increasing new remedies and health aids that are constantly updated by scientific research. However, we are far away from the time when “sexagenarian fat friars, reddened by wine and gladdened by wine-grape juice where those who practiced pharmaceutical art since their youth”.

Even if wine was drunk in profusion, freshly leaked out of the cask and submerged by foam, since scientists living in monasteries where, especially according to the Benedictine Rule, praying and working gladdened the hearts of God’s faithful servants, those refined connoisseurs of herbs were really able to administer remedies at pharmacological doses.

In order to clarify the meaning of minimal dosage I will report a passage from Palazzeschi, the Italian poet who defines himself as the clown of my soul, and implores: let me have fun.

This master of irony writes about a big dark shop where the sun or the moon, rain or snow came in at pharmacological doses. In the past, the pharmacist’s balance was often mentioned and considered as an essential instrument to weigh the various ingredients drawn from very charming and beautiful majolica vases, embellished with vegetal and mythological decorations. The apothecary or chemist was thought to be identical to a magician or an alchemist; which didn’t hurt his feelings. He was enigmatic like the characters of ancient fairy tales, those who drew the curtain over nightmares.

The pharmacist was indeed called before the doctor and was asked to suggest a diagnosis according to his skills, quite often this was rather different from that of the medical officer.

I personally have no recollection of pharmacists always ready to administer medicines: they were on the contrary quite strict vis-à-vis those who tended to make an excessive use of them. They had nothing to do with so-called farmacari at whom Petrarch hurled abuse as they didn’t hesitate before prescribing any kind of drugs. In retrospect, looking at my childhood, I can realize to what extent the treating habits of that time – not so many years ago – were lacking accuracy.

Anyway, since I was child, I was taught that pharmacology studies the properties of medicines, mixing them so as to obtain compounds and preparations suitable for curing diseases. This was a sort of smattering deriving from erudite quotations and maybe, even if nobody knew that the author was Cuoco, through his words, it was explained that “botany and chemistry administer medicines, whereas pharmacology prepares and puts them together”. This led to the birth of shops selling medicinal herbs and spices. As to medicine, it was sufficient to know, according to Baldelli, that this science “was then divided into three parts: that is that the first had to be cured with food, the second with medicines and the third using the doctor’s hands. The Greek people called the first one dietetics, the second pharmacology and the third surgery”. Needless to say that, as everybody admitted that Jupiter was immortal, he couldn’t be considered similar to humans who were instead doomed to suffering and to live a short life. According to Greek mythology, Athena, the ever virgin

Wisdom that sprang fully armed from the brain of the gods’ father, suggested to him a way that allowed men to justify their existential condition. Being spurred by the fertile couple made up of Uranus and Gaea, and precisely united by the lord of the thunder, Zeus was afraid of the power of Metis, his wise partner. Pushed by the fear of losing his throne, he had swallowed her. However, Metis was expecting Athena that, as soon as she was born out of her father’s head, insisted on keeping her virginity and managed to place herself at a higher level compared to other supreme deities, doomed to be deprived of all their powers throughout religious changes.

Athena suggested that Zeus should marry Nemesis and they would give birth to the “ransom”. However, the goddess of revenge and punishing justice was not willing to marry the god that turned into an eagle. She even him and turned herself into animals that were easy prey for the terrible rapacious. She knew that Zeus would never dare attack her. Once again Athena suggested to her powerful father how to overcome the reluctance of Nemesis. The goddess of wisdom turned into an eagle. Nemesis thought she was

Zeus and decided to challenge him by turning into a wild goose, the bird with wonderful feathers after which was named Penelope.

However, the father of gods appeared disguised as a marvellous swan. Nemesis thought that the cruel god would rush upon that innocent animal as he couldn’t hit her: she told the swan to follow her and they took shelter in a cave. Zeus married Nemesis and as soon as the longed for egg was laid, Hermes, the fierce messenger of gods, hastened to entrust it to Leda’s womb. The god of travels and messages was tempted to stop and admire what he could see in that egg which was doomed to reconcile men and gods.

Meanwhile, he had to rush and the egg laid by Nemesis was finally entrusted to Leda’s body that became the mother of the Dioscuri – Castor and Pollux - , of Clystemnestra and the wonderful Eileen, the most beautiful mortal woman. Beauty was born. It was worthwhile living for her: she was the most precious illusion and, for her, men would bear the most serious pains. All illusions are illuminated by beauty that fights us, but at the same time makes us become reconciled with the dream of harmony. I have just narrated a wonderful tale, but I have to say that immortality is in fact the most supreme human dream. Immortality is a dream to be realized, nobody can say how and when, but meanwhile, throughout centuries, man has tried to overcome physical pain and live as long as possible: are we scared of life that is beautiful, or rather of death? It is not my intention to debate on this statement taken from Quo Vadis. On the contrary, although I am not an expert in this field, I have been entrusted with the task of retracing the history of medical science starting from the time the world was interpreted from a magical and not yet from an empirical point of view.

Magic and religion are both present in the medicine practiced by Asclepius until the VI century B.C. Those who are searching for less imaginative information on Sirens and

Harpies, can find it in the history of Templar medicine practiced both near the sea and in the hinterland. Sirens and Harpies had been little girls who had cured some sick foreigners, they had spent long months with them; they practiced sacred prostitution to obtain the wedding dowry. Sometimes they ended up by falling in love and when, in springtime, their temporary partners resumed their journeys through sea and land routes, they couldn’t bear their sorrow and committed suicide.

These were simple love stories that popular pity and imagination had immortalized in the typologies of fish-women or bird-women.

After being very kind and sweet, due to moral decay, Sirens became the alluring creatures sailors had to beware of, whereas Harpies turned into the tempting creatures capable of destroying the love for the nuptial bed.

Nothing new under the sun. From the VI century B.C. onwards, medicine starts to found its schools where science is practiced. It is worthwhile mentioning the Italic school, that of Cnido and the famous school of Cos, founded by Hippocrates the Great, who exploited the insights of naturalist philosophers of Magna Grecia. Humoral medicine of Hippocrates – that didn’t support anatomical research – was kept up with the dogmatic and empirical currents. Afterwards, in Alexandria anatomical researches and discoveries flourished thanks to Herophylus and Herasystritus and there was a shift from humoral medicine to anatomical physiology and morbid anatomy. In the first century B.C.,

Asclepiades from Prusa founds the solidistic school where the atoms of Democritus, inside a body, move according to flows. In case of an obstruction or obstacle, it is necessary to re-establish the rule tute, cito, iucunde. The one who gave a definitive framework to ancient medicine was Claudio Galeno (129-201) – Galen – who, respecting the monotheistic theology practiced with conviction, resumed the studies performed by Alexandrian anatomists. As he couldn’t study human corpses, he dissected numerous animals and perfected the anatomical and physiological system whose tradition crossed the Middle Ages consistently with Aristotelianism.

Furthermore, it should be pointed out that Greek and Latin culture were involved in the separation between the Eastern and Western Roman Empire. After collapsing, the latter lost its classical culture that was instead resumed by Byzantines and became a point of reference for Arab scientific culture. Medical science was then saved and practiced by western monasticism, while the advanced scientific culture - spread through official comments on medicine, astronomy, chemistry and psychology - began to circulate in Europe in the XII century. It is also worthwhile recalling that the Andalusian geographer, Abdullah Aldirisi (1100-1166) wrote a treaty for Roger II where, before Galileo (1564-1642), the roundness of the earth rotating around the sun with the other planets was asserted. Averroes, Razi, Geber, Avicenna, are among the thousands of scientists who followed Mahomet’s warning: “search for science even if this may lead you to China”. It was mainly an invitation to study nature, understand its secrets, invent its marks and comprehend the scientific rules underlying world harmony. A verse written by Farid alDin Attar (1140-1240) and taken from “The Koran without secrets” by Gabriele Mandel has been considered as a summary of the whole Arab scientific elaboration, it states: “When God’s majesty appears, a single atom releases the strength of one hundred hurricanes”. Starting from these concepts Albert Einstein claimed: “the cosmic religious experience is the most ancient and powerful source of scientific research…This is a deep emotional belief that makes me feel the presence of a higher rational power, revealed by our incomprehensible universe, that shapes my idea of God”.

Going back to medicine in the West which started to be developed inside monasteries, it is necessary to mention first of the all the one that was founded by Benedetto da Norcia in Montecassino devoted to hospital care and pharmaceutical activities. The hospitalized patients were not only monks: the sick were welcomed along all the roads leading to the Holy land . The monks were expert in choosing the right herbs and medicinal plants to make treatments. Lay medicine was developed in the IX century starting from its first and most important centre: The School of Salerno. At the beginning, this school followed the classical tradition, but, from the XI century onwards, it was influenced by Arab science and Constantine the African (1018-1087) who was expert in Greek, Arab and Latin sciences as well as fluent in their respective languages.

His presence in the School gave it that particular multifaceted character emerging from the Regimen sanitatis salernitanum or Flos medicinae. Later on, universities were set up and in this respect Mondino dei Luzzi has to be mentioned. He was professor of anatomy at Bologna University: he used to read the classical text while showing his students how a human corpse had to be dissected in order to detect the parts concerning the lecture he was delivering. This happened in 1316 and it seemed that the Middle Ages wanted to entrust the changing times with its two opposite sides regarding medical science: the progressive side – characterized by universities – and the dogmatic one – characterized by Hippocrates and Galen.

Humanism rediscovered the Latin and Greek languages, corrected the numerous mistakes contained in the manuscripts and finally the time of Paracelsus arrived. However, before writing of him, I think it right to mention other important personalities such as the Italian physician Gerolamo Fracastoro, who founded the pathology of infectious diseases with his work De Contagione et Contagiosis Morbis, the botanist and anatomist Andrea Cisalpino who described veins and arteries, the Belgian anatomist Andrea Vasalio, who founded experimental anatomy with his work De Umani Corporis Fabrica, illustrated by Giovanni

Stefano di Calcar, a disciple of Titian. Chemists like Bernardo Palissy were born, and studies on ceremonial and natural magic – of which Della Porta was particularly fond and described it as “completion of philosophy of nature and perfect science” – were carried out. Also occult sciences started to flourish and Cornelio Agrippa, physician, philosopher, astrologer and alchemist, in his work De Occulta Philosophia clarified that magic had to be conceived as the science that detects natural processes and orient them where it is necessary. Filippo Teofrasto Bombasto of Hohenheim, also known as Paracelsus, dealt with medicine combined with astrology on one side and alchemy on the other in order to respect the relation with macrocosm and microcosm. He also discovered many healing remedies, taught how to take advantage of several poisons, proved the healing properties and use of antimony and mercury: he is considered to be the real founder of modern pharmacological chemistry. He even dared to burn the works of Galen and Avicenna. Briefly, philosophers, mathematicians, physicists, astronomers and alchemists could benefit from their mutual contributions and paved the way for Galileo, Bacon, and Descartes who celebrated the triumph of the methodological orientation.

Modern biology was born. Redi’ s demonstration seems rather important: he showed how worms and insects develop from eggs that can be detected only with magnification. Then came the achievements of the Age of Enlightenment: Morgagni, Valsalva and Malpighi who demonstrated the relationship between topical anatomical alterations and symptomatology. What happened from Lavoisier onwards was mainly centred on the following steps: discovery of internal breathing, solution of hygiene issues, against smallpox, combining semiology with morbid anatomy, upgrading of technical instruments and discovery of cells. From the

XIX century onwards, discoveries followed one another quite rapidly leading to new and wider horizons for advertising the various drugs.

The development of medical science has been accompanied by the parallel one of drugs.

Pharmacy is in fact the art of preparing them following doctors’ prescriptions, scientific indications, directives of the official pharmacopoeia and regulations. I have already stressed that my research field is that of imagination fine-tuned by the pictorial art to advertise drugs and, of course, spreading information on new drugs is extremely important to pharmaceutical companies.

Industrial development has therefore made advertising compulsory, with the contribution of both art and science, not to mention that touch of appeal that sounds like a promise, waiting for those who hope. Nobody could have ever imagined the advertising inventions that became widespread in the XIX century, when posters widening communication messages previously conveyed by simple window bills, often deprived of pictures, were introduced in the cities. There were neither advertising brochures or promotion of miraculous discoveries able to make people recover their good health when medicines were looked for on the grass or in the forest, or when those remedies were considered to be a divine gift, since the ancient doctor cured man’s soul and body at the same time. Indian, Egyptian and Greek priests were in fact in charge of dosing species, drugs and infusions.

Phoenicians started to trade the very drugs that were essential to early pharmacists. Galen launched on the Roman market a great number of drugs and, as a result, the various medical mixtures were called galenical preparations. The Arab people invented syrups, tinctures and julep, so that the first pharmacies sprang up to prepare them. We have briefly mentioned the medicines of the Salerno School, and it is worthwhile observing that those doctors like many others belonging to different schools, used to travel across Europe to sell their products at excessive prices. Beyond valid and skilled drug promoters, charlatans, vulgar touts, profane monks and nuns started to proliferate to the point the Frederick II banned charlatanism.

The School of Salerno was officially acknowledged as University for future doctors and pharmacists. The two sciences were separated, those who graduated in the two disciplined couldn’t have business relations.

Chemist’s shops had to stick to regulated hours, prices were fixed according to the law and the Antidotarium di Nicola became the first official pharmacopoeia of the time. State pharmacies were born. In the Middle Ages pharmacology could benefit from chemical contributions, in the Renaissance, pharmacies became famous thanks to their beautiful artistic furniture and very precious vases.

Between the XVII and the XX century, the production of specific remedies was incumbent on pharmaceutical industries.

These started to sprawl and became bigger and bigger, so that their wide productive activity was accompanied by ad hoc regulations and the adoption of specific free trade and prescription models, always kept under strict control. Reading drug specifications provided by physicians a century or decades ago means receiving and acknowledging very precise information, supported by detailed descriptions. That kind of advertising could be conceived as a private communication. It was then up to the doctor to explain to the patient the benefits promised by the drug he would prescribe, also through an efficacy test. Once in the doctor’s hands, that drug would work miracles: the pharmaceutical industry seemed to invite users to check the quality of the products it provided.

This volume allows us to retrace past times that will never come back. Customs and habits that belonged to our ancestors, grandfathers, dear people who lived in the XIX century, in the first half of the short century and at the beginning of the second half. The new millennium has inherited epoch-making unpredictable changes following one another and, as already stated, we will be able to assess what is happening and will happen only keeping at right distance from it. In critical times judgement has to be suspended.

Nevertheless, it has to be emphasised that new waves of ignorance and the wish to believe in magic and miracles have to put up with the harassment of charlatans that make fun of sufferers and official medicine, even because the label of national health disservice is hardly effaceable and the poor consolation of denunciations is not sufficient to solve old problems aggravated by difficult economic conditions.

Waste and squandering, connivance, completely furnished facilities that have never been operated, highly complicated and expensive machinery, bought and destined to mould in warehouses, light-hearted patronage management, all this bears down on the unfortunate that falls ill. If on the one hand excellent health facilities are to be praised, on the other, new troubles are emerging in old ones such as bureaucratic confusion worsened by the unskilled workers’ sloppiness. This is of course a well-known social issue and I am just describing my personal experience in places where any kind of dirt hides behind neglect and greed. In an attempt to suggest how to go beyond the positive images selected and published to celebrate the Centenary of the Italian Association of Doctors and Pharmacists, I like to see how the need to advertise drugs and artistic inspiration – that have always stirred a nice mixture – have matched over time. Metaphorical games are quite evident in this particular kind of communication that, in order to be efficacious from a scientific perspective – which requires the use of scientific terms – as well as from that of a direct impact on the public with the most appropriate and rapid connotation, has to combine pharmacology and creativity. For example, if we examine how the Italian Biochemical Institute has advertised Eparema, it is explained that: “it is a stimulant of liver activities, indicated as a choleretic for medical drainage, expectorant cholagogue, and regulator of intestinal functions”. But the clearest message is expressed by those lines indicating perfectly regulated pathways. The perfect hepato-intestinal function is also highlighted by the exchange mechanism regulating the passage to the various necessary directions. This advertising is perfectly connoted, which is also the case for that proposed by Marvin for Cobalton. With vitamin B12 doses, the drug takes off like a shot from Italy, crosses the earth’s orbit and soars into the sky. The phial- rocket of Cobalton warns on its trace that the normal kind can be freely prescribed by INAM: it brings good health to Italy and the whole world. Thanks to its futuristic inspiration it does everything in its power to be beneficial to stars. It brings good health to the universe suffering from avitaminosis and in need of an aggressive vitamin therapy.

It often happened that pharmaceutical companies urged doctors not only to prescribe their medicines but also to inform on the results of treatments. In other cases the choice of the trade name had a reassuring purpose.

Giovanni Barbero, Naples, Via Roma, formerly Via Toledo 150, recommended its mustard paper with the symbol of the worker bee and the motto: Labore. What more could be wished for? Other advertisements were more drastic, curt like that of the tar balm Maglieri prescribed to treat senile acute chronic bronchitis.

In August 1923, the Sanitaria Società Anonima came up, in a very convincing way, with its baby’s bottle, the Biberon Robert. It would have been immediately chosen by “intelligent mothers, as its rubber dummies had been so well designed that babies seemed to prefer bottle-feeding”. Therefore, all mothers that didn’t want to worry about their sweet babies’ health, had to use the Biberon Robert. This allowed them to “observe peacefully the blooming upbringing of their baby and even save money thanks to the top quality bottles and accessories”.

The same kind of advertisement for Ferrenosio Favara is rather puzzling. The tone is resolute and quite haughty: “It is beyond doubt a miraculous tonic; weak, anaemic and pale people will soon recover their healthy color”.

Ferrenosio is a “ a mixture of condensed juice extracted from the best grapes of Marsala , iron and phosphorous” It has been tested and certified by professor Fresenius “The greatest chemist in the world” . If the grapes of Marsala guarantee the exhilarating effects of the mixture, the final part of the boasting advertising slogan is really of interest: “and, what is more, it doesn’t darken your teeth”.

In the forties, realism sets its mark on the advertisement of Metionina, painted by Anelli , a disciple of Matania: “a comfortable small stair, a sponge imbued with the medicine, and your liver is clean again”, put in a concavoconvex section provided with all the biliary pathways. Luigi Anelli is also the author of the drawing recommending the hygiene of the mouth. The fierce dragon of infections causing measles, scarlet fever, diphteria, influenza, poliomyelitis, and attacking man through the oropharyngeal cavity, has to be defeated.

A sharp snip and the defeat is definitive. It has to be pointed out that the worst diseases are the least manifest ones, those that are hidden in the tail, since it is there that poison is always nested – in cauda venum.

As to the antineuralgic Biofarma Sedal , it is interisting to highlight that the human shape goes forwards as if it was in front of us, but, at the same time, the commercial artist shows the nervous branches as if they were examined from behind.

The graphic description advertising a vitamin – Vitamina Lorenzini – is even rather sophisticated. A very neat woman’s hand caresses a delicate leaf of a sensitive plant with its forefinger. On the shelf, a wedding ring indicates the marital status and leads the eye towards the L of the Lorenzini label that appears to be widespread in the whole world to offer vitamins to both children and adults.

Many things can be recalled and learnt by going back to images that now belong to past experiences. I was also able to look at some drug advertisements on the walls of the old country kitchen. We smiled while we were looking at that of Resenacid C promising the pleasures of the table to the sick too. The simple man that has drunk red wine, eaten seafood and possibly many other courses during a lavish meal, has just filled his pipe and his eyes already show the effects of such a big feed. No problem: the new medicine doesn’t cause secondary acidity, pyrosis, eructation, gastric disorders, and it also has beneficial effects in case of colitis. The figure that keeps a precious vase almost religiously refers to Pompeian mysteries. The scene has been chosen by Schering to advertise Florigen, a vaginal suppository and lavage. The laboratory of Doctor Gilberto Borromeo, in 1920, was among the first to exploit viscum album as a hypotensive drug and to introduce elastin in the treatment.

Hypotensive tablets were slightly laxative but the motto guaranteed: sanitas usque ad sangiunem. The image of an athlete in perfect shape was then emphasized. His strength was in contrast with a dark shadow indicating a falling old man or a prematurely aged derelict.

It is difficult to imagine to what extent I have appreciated the mixture between art and pharmaceutical industry, especially when productive intelligence and poetry seems to match.

Tauracolo guarantees: if you take it, winter will be a pleasure. The commercial artist has interpreted a winter landscape where different activities are carried out. Skiers are devoted to their sporting activity. While all trees are bare, pines are green and wave their tops in the sky.

A hunter with his dog chases his prey. Briefly, the weather is cold and, to be in good health, the respiratory system has to be protected.

Tauracolo is the oral solution allowing to administer high doses of guaiacol without any intolerance phenomenon.

On 3 April 1952, Crinos suggests for Ipones Metonina a terrifying advertisement, to say the least. The pharmaceutical company reports a quotation from C.H. Brest (Recent Progress in

Hormone Research, 1949): “the pancreas is the guardian of the liver). In order to hint at goose liver, particularly appreciated by the glutton and used for the speciality requiring a very cruel attitude towards the web-footed bird that has to be stuck to the wooden board from which it will be able to free itself only after the final sacrifice, the artist has proposed with cruel irony the image of a white feathered goose shot through by the nails of that terrible torture and obliged to swallow some food that will make its liver swell in an excessive way.

The poor goose stuffs itself, grows fat and is finally sacrificed for the gluttony of those that cannot help eating a pâté de foie gras.

The image doesn’t need any comment.

Obviously, a more incisive and less cruel expression modality could have been used to emphasize the properties of the medicine.

A more direct reference might have been the one involving all those numerous vulgar people at the table, stuck to the chairs of their huge meals, eating greedily until the inevitable collapse. Another advertisement for Eparema is clearly inspired by high technology and engineering studying and regulating energy flows. It shows a control board provided with electric resistances and handles-keys of flow regulation. As a regulator, Eparema acts on biligenetic, uropoietic, antitoxic, glycogenetic, hematopoietic and thermogenetic functions.

The strong man wearing the belt Galliano seems to declare : “I hold the sea in my power”. Wearing his precious patented belt, he can bravely face any rolling and pitching. The belt, essential against sea-sickness, won the golden medal at Turin Expo in 1898.

Art nouveau also inspires the artist advertising the fortifying pills with the Grocco formula.

The huge snake of neurasthenia has tightened round the heart of the wonderful girl that holds her bursting head in her hands, in despair. The scene is made even more dramatic by the special color red. Other snake-like plots will follow before the final collapse of that soul in torment. At a certain point, from an espalier rose bed, embellished by the floral pattern, scatters a shower of rose petals. In a similar predicament, nobody could help taking the pills produced by the Società Anonima Prodotti Chimici Cesare Pegna & Figli – based in Florence.

If one is not particularly careful, it is difficult to see the faithful mastiff resting on the dressing gown hem of its poor master. It is indeed the latter that is suffering ‘like a dog’. The armchair represents his suffering; his gout gives no respite to the bandaged foot laid on a cushion. The word “rheumatism” is a telltale sign. It is the cause of the man’s upset face, nervous hands touching the painful points of his back and shoulders, passing from one joint to another and longing for rest. The skullcap is not sufficient to protect that poor irascible, intractable old man who has no relief. The solution could be Kalmine that overcomes every kind of pain: a charitable person should get it for him.

The background chosen by Bignami to advertise Ferro China Zanardi recalls the style of the Italian poet Carducci “the black towered city of Bologna rises in the clear winter and the hill above it is charming with its white snow”.

Three thoughtful, naked, proud, strong athletes pay homage to the city in front of them and carry the weight of huge bottles containing the wonder tonic. Since it has proved efficacious for their statuesque body, everybody could confide in the famous wellwishing motto: mens sana in copore sano. It was a time of first-class brave belligerents and virile intentions. Ferro China spurred them: vis unita fortior.

SIR, Specialità Medicinali Roma comes up with a very persuasive advertisement for Anemipan.

It is in fact extremely positive and its visual code is completely in line with medical professional ethics: the man dressed in a white coat holds a young patient and at the same time he undertakes to repel death that has already laid hands on its prey.

It is interesting to notice the contrast between light and dark, the white coat of the doctor and the thickening growing shadows still hanging over the scene, while an exhausted creature seems to have no strength left: she is hardly able to hold on to the shoulders of the one who is taking care of her.

The skeleton representing death has knelt down to carry the weight of the girl, but it is indeed the doctor that feels to be on his knees: he is tired, sad. He has closed his eyes and is clearly realizing his condition. It is a difficult situation but science doesn’t give in, even if the doctor is confronted with the awareness that it is not up to the task: but it is precisely the importance of the task that induces to fight with the support of medicines. In the meanwhile, how could we fight against apathy, obesity and neurasthenia ? The right remedy is Triglandina Bouty.

Here are the results: a large woman of considerable bulk – the epitome of obesity – is looking at herself in a mirror. A “sphinx” supplied with lamps and well framed was in front of her. In that mirror for haute couture she finds herself slender, shapely, beautiful like a star. The action of Triglandina has even slimmed the dots of her dress. Pharmaceutical companies confided in doctors knowing how to appeal to their pride. We supply the raw material and your prescription will assess the results.

Here is the style of the message: “Illustrious doctor, may this view of snow-capped Milan and its industrious citizens, remind you of the range of our products that, in your hands, will be the right weapon to fight against diseases caused by cold”. The tone is quite serious. “ We are the remedy, you will handle it and the effect is guaranteed”.

The promotional brochures of Maggioni & C. of Milan appear to be interesting for the so-called intentional ambiguity. The cartoons resume famous expressions and insert them in totally unrealistic settings. For instance the expression: my reign for a horse (Shakespeare – Richard III, Act V), is referred to a wishful mare living on a very small island separated by the sea from another tiny island where lives the stallion. Two opposite islands with the sea between them, the sea – il mare, che c’è di mezzo come tra il dire e il fare – , that is saying and doing are two things.

The mare has got a flowing curly crest embellished by showy braids that adorn its tail as well. Poor mare ! She is shedding scalding tears, she is in love with the stallion and isolated from his longed-for beloved: she is like a queen that would readily bartered her reign for that desired horse.

A fish out of water inside the cartoon indicates a condition of lack of power. The famous expression tu quoque brute fili mi is instead extracted from Suetonius (The life of Julius

Caesar) . In the region of Suburra, at the Sette Colli bar, the pleasure-seeking Caesar holding a flask of Chianti , is with a woman, a hard drinker of wine, who is offering and consuming liqueur of Bacchus.

Brutus is also in the bar and is having a very good time with two other women, refined wine connoisseurs: they are tasting some falerno and bardolino.

Tu quoque brute fili mi? The Latin language of the cartoon may be criticized. However, who can pay attention to writing if drunk with wine? Tra falerno e bardolino un dolcetto sopraffino – between a glass of falerno and a glass of bardolino enjoy an exquisite dolcetto

…..Archimedes is the protagonist of the advertisement for Vitamin B1: Eureka is the cry recalled by Vitruvius when he talks about the hydraulic law discovered by the scientist.

“Eureka”! – cries Archimedes raising his hands to heaven gratefully.

Don’t be surprised at the water heater: a scientist needs only a lighted candle to obtain the right temperature. On the contrary, you should be surprised at the presence of the mermaid waiting for someone who can soap her back and caudal fin. Archimedes has found something, which means that nothing seek, nothing find. And finders are keepers. He                                                                                      won’t have to return the little mermaid to the sea. The atmosphere of the cartoons in the

Corriere dei piccoli where reigned Tordella and Capitan Cocoricò as well as marital quarrels with a banging of pots and pans is evoked by the sketch bearing the wording: Si vis pagen para bellum, extracted from the third volume of “Insitutiones rei militaris” by Vegetius. It advertises the B1 and Vita B1 products by Maggioni ensuring that: “the synthetic vitamin with its absolute purity and checked activity is available at average-aggressive doses”.

The sour chesty wife folds her arms, in spite of being equipped with carpet beater.

Even the cat is aware that the ill-intentioned woman is reflecting: she has to change her plans.

The smoking husband is sitting in his armchair, vigilant: keeping one eye on the newspaper and the other on possible attacks.

He is well prepared: he has got an arquebus, a double-barreled gun, a revolver, two sharp knives and even a rolling-pin within reach. His position is not easily conquerable. If you want peace, get ready to war.

The wife gets her revenge in a different way: she makes her husband try the burden of “culture”. She hits him maliciously using the volumes containing the greatest number of pages and erudite researches: the impact is more effective.

- the book and he who wrote it acted as a gobetween … – is uttered by Francesca ( Dante, the Inferno, Chant V), but the worst thing is that heavy munitions are available to those who are able to use them. Book-stores are dumps loaded with available munitions.

When a serious speech alternates or coexists with a jocular one, it yields the best results.

Horace seems to agree with the above statement: Omne tulit punctum qui miscuit utile dulci.

When images are to provide the event with the right meaning, the work of an artist capable of dignifying communication has to be chosen. In this respect, it is worthwhile recalling that for the celebration of the Centenary of the

American Medical Association, the commemorative stamp with the date of first issue, 1 June 1947, was engraved with the 1933 faithful copy by Joseph Tomanek of the original work “The doctor”. Sir Luke Fildes, of the Royal Academy, personal doctor of Queen Victoria, visits a sick child in one of her estates.

The doctor is thoughtful, he is touched by the seriousness of the situation as should be all scientists devoted to medicine that should never indulge in self-celebration.

And, to be honest, even the farmacopola – that is the pharmacist – resists and finds his followers, satisfied with so many attentions.

The term had once a humorous meaning: it was ironically used to indicate those who practiced the profession of pharmacist and generously supplied drugs, that is marketed them. Therefore, rather than a scientific professional, he was a trader. Nelli was a bitter enemy of so-called farmacopola “better qualified for scribbling rather than making out prescriptions that, misunderstood by many ignorant pharmacists, can cause those huge mistakes commonly known as quid pro quo, misunderstandings of apothecaries”.

Cursed be those charlatans capable of claiming the meritorious title of Cav. Chimico and boasting it only to impress people ! Actually, they had no idea what chemistry was !

Anyway, what’s the point of getting steamed up and consumed with rage? You had better take a pill of Valeriana Dispert, an excellent sedative that can even allow a poet fallen into extreme poverty to keep calm and concentrated.

The quality of the Dispert product is witnessed by the work of art of Spitzberg “the poet” who gets along in a garret having an increasingly hostile attitude towards human beings. There isn’t even enough space to lay a kind of mattress, or any trace of furniture. The cast iron stove is only an old souvenir, it is completely out of order. In the house of abject poverty, where poetry stubbornly survives, whereas the poet should die in desperation, deprived of food like the stove, something strange is happening. Although the sheets of his verse are destined to fire, that is just like pure illusion as they could never last a long time, although the emaciated tenant has to use an open umbrella to escape the flood, although the only garment is hung from a nail, the will to write poetry hasn’t been lost. What happened? Was it due to the miraculous effects of Dispert? maybe..., but it happened that we have decided to end the above digressions with a game of rhymes retracing the story of the poor poet whose inspiration and verse are saved thanks to Valeriana Dispert, a heaven-sent remedy for any desperate case.
